Jiuhaizi Mountains

Mt. Yinhaizi

Jiuhaizi Mountains is a cluster of 5000+m mountains by the northwest of Minya Konka Range.  It is seperated by Riuche valley with the main range. The mountains here are not as tall as the mountains in the main range of Minya Konka. Though at around 5000 meters but still steep. These mountains lie northeast to southwest. There are around total 6+ peaks that are over 5000 meters. The highest mountain is called Mt. Jiuhaizi that is at an elevation of 5528 meters. There are Chinese teams who have explored these mountains. Some of them have been summited.

Jiuhaizi Mountains

Mt. Jiuzhaizi is 5528 meters tall. The upper part of this mountain resembles Little Konka and was said to be steep. There are no record of any summiting of this mountain. Another mountain that has a name is Mt. Yinhaizi that is at 5388 meters. Mt. Yinhaizi is 3.8km northeast to Mt. Jiuhaizi. There are small size of glaciers by these two mountains. A Chinese team attempted this peak and reached 5100 meters. The recorded there is a section of steep wall that is at least 40 meters.Photos of these mountains are mainly taken from its north by Zheduoshan or by its south from Panpanshan. South to Mt. Jiuhaizi there are two distinctive mountains within this part that are seperated by the side valley of Panpanshan. These two mountains are called  Mt. Jiazela (5500m) and Mt Gonkang Sangri (5180).The rest of the other mountains don’t have names or names haven’t been confirmed. Mt. Jiazela is a mountain south to Mt. Jiuhaizi. It is either 5404 meters or 5500 meters according to different resource. Mt. Gonkang Sangri is 5180 meters and located south to Mt. Jiazela. This mountain lies across the valley of Riuchi by its west. Mt. Gongkang Sangri is 5180 meters by altitude. It was first climbed by a Chinese team and named was given. This mountain was recorded as an “easy” mountain that is suited for trainning for 5000+ meters climbing. Snow on top of the mountain all year round and winter ice is small.

Climbing season

The area has a temperate plateau climate, and the climate changes greatly. The rainy season is from June to October each year, and the dry season is from November to May the following year.The annual priciptation is 800-900 mm, mostly concentrated in July, August, and September. There is a large amount of cloud in summer, and most of the climbing activities are in beween the dry and rainy seasons.

Approach

Kangding and Laoyulin Village are the starting places for trips to Jiuhaizi Mountains. Laoyulin is also the starting place for trips to Lamoshe, and other mountains in northern part of Minya Konka. The walking from road head to the base of the mountains is around 18km. 

Climbing History

Mt. Yinhaizi was attempted in Mt. Gonkang Sangri was climbed. Mountains in this part of Minya Konka are less-visited and attempted.
