Mt. Zhongshan

Mt. Zhongshan is 6886 meters above sea level. Its location is 101.9 E,, 29.7N. It is located in Luding County, Sichuan Province. Mt. Zhongshan is the second highest peak of Minya Konka Range. It is 6 kilometers northeast to the main peak of Gongga. On its southwest ridge which connects to Mt. Gongga there is a side peak that is 6652 meters high, and this side peak has a name Mt. Gongzi, the son of Gongga.

The name of Zhongshan came from Mr. Sun Yat Sen, founder of the former regime of China in 1912. In 1931 an research team organized by Sun Yat-sen University of Guangdong came to visit under the guidance of a Swiss professor of geology. Due to bad weather and insufficient equipment, the team could not reach the top but ended up mapping the glaciers and mountains. Later on the professor named this mountain under Mr. Sun Yat Sen, the former translation of Sun Zhongshan, hence the name Zhongshan.

On the east side of Mt. Zhongshan there is Mozigou Glacier.

Mt. Gongzi is 6652-meters above sea level, a mountain located in central Minya Konka Range in Daxueshan Range. Gongzi means “son of Gongga”. This mountain is located on the ridgeline between Mt. Gongga and Mt. Zhongshan and only 2km northeast to Mt. Gongga. In 1981 a team from Switzerland made the first summit to Mt. Gongzi.In 2010 A Chinese team made summit to this mountain and named it Mt. Gongzi.

Climbing Season

East of Minya Konka has a big climate difference at its base to its higher part. The monsoon came in at every June and won’t end by October. From November to the next May is the drier season. Former climbing attempts were made in April, May and September and October.

Approaching

East side of the mountain is the way to Mt. Zhongshan. From Mozigou, the small valley where the Mozi Galcier is located, seems to be the shortest but given the glacier itself is 4km long that this route maybe even more time-taken. The northern valley Yanzigou can get you to the north side and west side of Mt. Zhongshan.
