Renzong Mountains are located by the south of Daxueshan Range and south to Minya Konka Range. Its main peak is called Mt. Renzong with an altitude of 6079m. Renzong Mounains is located about 32km south of the main peak of Gongga Range. It is located at the junction of Kangding and Jiulong counties in Ganzi Prefecture.

The name Renzong came from an ancient Chinese emporer from Song Dynasty when a wide dammed lake was formed from a large mudslide. This is a relatively independent mountain system. Daxueshan mountain range extends southwards here and graduals. There are several 5700-5900m high mountains around Renzong Mountain. It is often rarely seen due to the smoggy surroundings of this area.  

Location

This cluster of mountain is located between Kangding and Jiulong and better accessed from Shimian in Ya’an. It is around 60km west to the town of Shimian and around 120km south to the city of Kangding. Road that goes to the mountain is only available from its east via S211. From Chengdu drive to road head of this mountain takes around 5-6 hours only.

Plus the side peaks of Mt. Renzong, there are about 10 mountains that are over 5000 meters and most of them are not climbed. This part of Daxueshan Range and south of these mountains are one of the least explored places in China. We don’t have much photos to show.

Mt. Renzong

Mt. Renzong is at 6079 meters above sea level and the river down the valley is at lower than 3000 meters. It’s coordination is 29.17.43N, 101.54.30E. 

Mt. Shenshan Liangzi

Mt. Shenshan Liangzi is 5793 meters above sea level. Sheshang Liangzi is a Chinese name. It is the border mountain beween Garze and Ya’an and the highest point of Ya’an.  This mountain doesn’t have records of climbing.

Climbing Season:

The area has a temperate plateau climate, and the climate changes greatly. The rainy season is from June to October each year, and the dry season is from November to May the following year.

The annual rainfall is 800-900 mm, mostly come in July, August, and September. In summer, the amount of cloud is the most, and the daily temperature difference is big. Sometimes the temperature can reach -20 ℃ above 6000 meters. The weather in the dry season is sunny and milder than in other areas of the same latitude. Most mountaineering activities are conducted between dry and rainy seasons mainly in October to December and April to May. 

Approach:

There is a water dam north to the Renzong Mountains, the valley south to the head of the dam is the access to the mountains to its north. North base of the mountain is where the former expeditions have taken place. There is a basic road goes all the way from the river by 2900 meters to 3400 meters and the road head can be used as base camp. Valleys here are not very open. Flat terrains are hard to find.

South of the mountains have not been explored yet. There is also a road from S211 by Anshun (altitude 900m) that goes all the way to the side valleys that lead to the mountains of Renzong by its south.

East to this place is of the rainiest places in Sichuan. Note the roads are good but may be damaged by anual rain. 

Essential Locations

Shimian is a county level town located by Dadu River. It is south to the Daxueshan Range and a stopover place for expeditions to the south range of Daxueshan Range. 

Caoke Xiang is a village by the south of Minya Konka.

Climbing history:

In November 2009, four Hungarian climbers disappeared here.

After worth a team from Denmark made a successful summit.
